Brown Bear, Brown Bear

A few weeks ago in my classroom we were learning about colors. I spent a great deal of time trying to find books and things that I could use to introduce and teach my students about colors. One of the books that I decided to use was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
This book is a classic and is used all of the country to teach children colors. I had a lot of fun coming up with a few activities to use with this book. I wanted to use this book during our circle time when I had students together as a whole group. We read the book together and students absolutely loved it. After the first two pages they were trying to follow along with the repetitive verses. We read the books once and talked about the different colors they saw in the book. Some of my students were able to tell me the names of colors but others were not. I then brought out images from the book and the color word for students to match. We did this as a whole class. I held up word strip such as brown bear and had a student come up and find the brown bear.
The images that I used with students are actually wall decals that I found at Target. They are the same pictures from the book, which is perfect. When I found these I was ecstatic. I took each image and placed it on card stock, laminated them, and them placed magnets on the backs.
Another activity we did along with Brown Bear, Brown Bear was sentence strips. I found this idea on Pinterest and loved it. My students had fun completing the sentences along with me.

Just the beginning...

My name is Jennifer Lowe and I am beginning my first year as a teacher. I have the pleasure of teaching 3,4, and 5 year olds with Montgomery County Head Start.

The school year has just begun, but I am starting to feel the stress already. I always knew that teaching was time consuming and took a lot of work. Throughout college and my student teaching I saw this first hand, but to be on my own to get everything prepared for the beginning of the year is a challenging task. There was so much to set up, so much to plan for, and so much to prepare for my students that sometimes I wonder how teachers get it all done!

I wanted to start this blog to join the teacher blog world and hopefully get feedback or advice from other teachers and to help other new teachers know they aren't the only one that is stressed!
